About AGM Batteries
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) refers to the construction of the battery.
AGM batteries differ from flooded lead-acid batteries (wet) like common automotive batteries, in that the electrolyte is held within ultra-fine glass mats rather than freely flooding the battery plates. Very thin glass fibres are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime. The fibres that compose the fine glass mat do not absorb nor are they affected by the acidic electrolyte.
AGM batteries can be fitted in multiple orientations and do not require constant maintenance. However, this does not mean they should not be regularly cleaned and tested.
AGM batteries have a cycle life of approximately 300 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. Although AGM batteries will not match the cycle-life performance of Gel batteries, they do offer a lower initial cost and will supply sufficient functionality to meet the needs of lighter-duty mobility and power applications.
